How are luxury bespoke shoes are made?

Leather is the most important element for making each one of our men’s bespoke shoes. Leather production is a process that requires masterful skills, heritage and passion. There is a rule of thumb that holds true for high quality men’s shoes: the more processed the leather is, the higher it is in quality. The effect of offering very well processed leathers, has a natural effect on the price. As a reference, between 45 to 50 % of the total production costs involved in making high quality men’s shoes are due to the costly raw material.
Cambrillón’s calf tanneries are mainly from North West Spain, Germany and Italy.
The types of leathers described below, represent a full array of the different types of leather skins Cambrillón offers. They are all used in luxury shoe production and their main differences go from the “look” to the “texture” point of view.
Painted Calf Leather
Crust calf leather (painted calf) enables artisans to hand paint the pieces with special creams and brushes, providing a very artisanal. Our source is Conceria Tolio from Italy, a tannery used by Santoni, Berlutti, among many others.
Besides the “plain” Painted Calf leather, Cambrillón also offers this leather engraved with different textures, like full grain or pebble grain.
Kid Suede
Kid Suede is the softer and velvety type of suede leather, which comes from small goat skins. These skins are rather small, so the consumption per pair is higher, hence increasing the price of leather. Kid suede stands out for its refined finishing with smaller grain on the surface.
Polished Calf
Polished calf refers to rectified grain calf, which eliminates any skin imperfections. The final look is not as natural as a regular, plain full grain, but the look is extraordinary and luxurious. This type of leather is quite expensive because of the post-production processes that it needs at the tannery. Polished Calf Leathers are hand painted by our artisans.

Patent Leather
Patent leather is a type of leather finishing where the material’s surface undergoes several special treatments, to acquire its highly glossy, shiny appearance.
Nubuck Leather
This type of leather stands out for being light weighted and supple. Nubuck is made up of the most outer layer of a hide; the surface is buffed to give the grain its characteristic light and velvety finishing.
Sartorial Materials
We offer a full array of sartorial fabrics, flannels and velvets as well as sartorial patterns like Tweed, Plaid, Tartan, Herringbone, Leopard, etc.
The result of mixing these sartorial materials with classic hand painted leather in a shoe, can be truly astonishing.
